Southwood, an 8700 acre planned community located on the southeast side of Tallahassee, provides the perfect family-friendly atmosphere for those who enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle. Most lots in the development are sized for easy maintenance, allowing residents ample time to enjoy the neighborhood’s numerous amenities. Available options include a community pool with a splash bucket area, two lighted tennis courts, a children’s playground, parks, and a community center.
The neighborhood also has several nature trails and is surrounded by four habitat preserves, which provide appropriate habitats for the Sherman’s Fox squirrel and the Southeastern American Kestrel (which is the smallest member of the falcon family). An abundance of other wildlife and plant species can be found throughout the neighborhood’s lakes and natural areas.
Another popular feature is the Southwood Golf Club, an 18-hole semi-private course designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates. Named one of the top 35 new golf courses in America by Golf Magazine, the club offers reasonably priced individual and family memberships. Other features of the golf club include the Southwood House, a special events venue originally built in downtown Tallahassee in 1865 and moved to its current location in 1939, and the Southwood Guest Cottages, which are available for use by guests of neighborhood residents.
Although the community is relatively new, the area has a rich and interesting history. The earliest known inhabitants were the Apalachee Indians, and artifacts from this culture dating to 1250 A.D. have been found in the area. Since then, the region has been home to Spanish missions, large plantations, farms, and cattle ranches. Construction on the current neighborhood began in 2000.
Southwood is ideally located, with grocery stores, restaurants, schools, medical offices, and the State of Florida Capital Circle Office Center all within a few minutes’ drive. The community is also eight miles or less from downtown Tallahassee, FSU, FAMU, Tallahassee International Airport, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and Capital Regional Medical Center.
Homes in the Southwood Community include single family homes, townhouses, and condominiums, with prices ranging from $200,000 to $1,000,000. Typical lot sizes range from approximately 0.15 acre to 1 acre, and some lots are still available for purchase.
Southwood is an immaculately maintained, family oriented community convenient to all that Tallahassee has to offer. If you desire a walkable neighborhood with amenities geared toward social interactions and an outdoor lifestyle, this could be the location of your new home.
